Something New
We now have a beautiful new CVS in the Forest at the corner of 40 and 314A. After watching the construction for months we all waited anxiously for the sign to light up with “Open”. And the New Harvest Church is now finished, a huge sprawling church building sitting back from the highway with neat landscaping across the front. A great addition to the community. We have had several businesses come and go this year, but our old stand-bys are still here, still taking ads in our paper, still helping with the school supply drive. We thank you for your support. And we ask that our community support them.

Flu Shot or not
According to the CDC the official flu season runs from Oct. 1st-March 31st. This year the flu vaccine protects against three influenza viruses: the 2009 H1N1, H3N2, and influenza B virus. There are 2 ways that you can choose to be protected from the flu:
- the “flu shot” contains a dead virus that is given with a needle, or nasal spray
- flu vaccine which is made from live, weakened flu viruses that do not cause the flu. After approximately two weeks after the vaccination, antibodies that protect against these three viruses develop in the body. According to the CDC, everyone over the age of 6 months should get the flu shot.
Exceptions: You have any of the following:
*severe allergy to chicken eggs
*reaction to an influenza vaccination
*developed Guillain-Barre syndrome within 6 weeks of getting the flu shot
*if you have a moderate to severe illness with a fever (after recovery you can get the
flu shot).
If you choose to get the flu shot you can expect possible side effects that would include but are not limited to:
soreness, redness, and/or swelling where the shot was given, a low grade fever and body aches.
Getting a flu shot is a personal choice everyone has to make. Discuss it with your health care provider. Sheila David, RN
In The Ocala National Forest
Be sure to wear bright colors for the next few months, hunters are out there now through the end of the year. Whether you are hiking or riding an atv keep in mind the hunters are there too. Also there is no dispersed camping, everyone must stay in a specified campground. It’s cooling down and so much nicer to go hiking now. Enjoy the beautiful Forest.
Sayings From Grumpy
*It’s always darkest just before dawn. So if you’re going to steal your neighbors newspaper, that’s the time to do it.
*Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you’re a mile away and you have their shoes.
*Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.
*If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably a wise investment.

A Dog Tale
A friend of mine answered a call for help from a dog groomer to discover a dog’s foot had become stuck in the washtub drain. Amid cries from the groomer and howls from the dog, he crawled under the sink, carefully removed the drain pipe and saw the pad of the dogs foot caught in the grid in the drain. After trying to remove the grid, while laying on his back under the sink, he finally squeezed the pad on the dogs foot together and the dog jumped free. Relieved, the dog relieved himself….right down the drain.!
The thanks you get for being a good Samaritan!

Ghost Towns
6th in our series of abandoned towns in the Forest is Stanton. Near the present village of Ocklawaha on Lake Weir was the former town of Stanton. It was founded in 1881 by E. Stanton Perrin. In an effort to promote the town he invested $56,000 dollars in a large lumber mill and a steamer to traverse Lake Weir. In the mid 1880′s there were about 200 residents, 2 general stores, a brick yard and shingle plant. The town died out just after the turn of the century. No traces remain.
